OSHA-Required Fire Extinguisher Training
We believe in the value of educating the public on the proper and correct use of fire extinguishers and suppression systems. It’s our goal for the future to expand this service beyond fire extinguishers into the full-service training arena.
Annual Fire-Extinguisher Training Course
This OSHA-Required Annual Training course fulfills the requirement for annual training in compliance with CFR 1910.157(g). We engage our students in learning about all classes of fire extinguishers while learning valuable life-safety information. After the training, students will have a chance to put their training to the test in our live fire-pan exercise.
Fire Extinguisher Classifications
- Class “A”: Extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials, such as paper, wood, cardboard and most plastics. Geometric Symbol (Green Triangle)
- Class “B”: Fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. Geometric Symbol (Red Square)
- Class “C”: Fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit-breakers and outlets. Geometric Symbol (Blue Circle). Note: Never use water to extinguish Class “C” type fires as there is a risk of electrical shock. The “C” classification means that the extinguishing agent is non- conductive
- Class “D”: Fire extinguishers are commonly found in welding shops and chemical laboratories. They are fires that involve combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. Geometric Symbol (Yellow Decagon)
- Class “K”: Fire extinguishers are for fires that involve cooking oils, trans-fats or fats in cooking appliances. Typically found in restaurants and cafeteria kitchens. Geometric Symbol (Black Hexagon).
Using a Fire Extinguisher Properly
- P.A.S.S. – When using a fire extinguisher, remember the phrase “PASS.”
- P – Pull the pull pin out.
- A – Aim the nozzle/hose of the extinguisher 6 inches before the base of the flames.
- S – Squeeze the lever down on the fire extinguisher.
- S – Sweep the nozzle/hose 6 inches past the fire on both sides.
